Increases to Minimum, National Wage and other statutory rates

Hopefully, you will be aware that the Government has confirmed that as of 1 April 2022, Minimum and National Living wage rates will increase from April 2022. The old and new rates are below:

  • National Living Wage (23 years and above)            £8.91     £9.50
  • Age 21-22 Years                                                          £8.36     £9.18
  • Age 18-20 Years                                                         £6.56     £6.83
  • Age 16-17 Years                                                          £4.62     £4.81
  • Apprentice Rate                                                        £4.30     £4.81


As is the ‘norm’ family-friendly leave rates are also changing, including maternity, paternity, shared parental, adoption, and parental bereavement leave. Employers will see this increase from £151.97 to £156.66 per week.

Finally, statutory sick pay (SSP) will also increase from £96.35 per week to £99.35 per week.


As an Employer what should you do now?

Ensure you have made the necessary changes in payroll, as the changes take place on 1 April 2022 you need to ensure any payments made after this date are reflected in your Employee pay, a failure to do so could lead to a claim being brought at an Employment tribunal for unpaid payments.


We recommend you write to all Employees who are subject to an increase on 1 April 2022 to inform them of the increase, and that you update your HR policies accordingly.
